United States, Mexico & Canada Bid Wins Vote For 2026 World Cup
Jun 14 2018
Major League Soccer released the following statement: "The decision to host World Cup 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the United States is a testament to our three nations coming together for the United Bid, and a monumental step in our collective mission to further advance the game of soccer in North America".
"Not to comment really on the USA side, but maybe they felt that they wished to go further in some additional letters which they had received from their president", he added.
The majority of the 80 matches in the North American bid would be played in the United States, who hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Due to the landscape, temperatures differ greatly and matches in Denver and Mexico City will be played at altitude.
Federation Internationale de Football Association will select up to 16 host cities from the 23 candidates proposed in the North American bid.
"As a result of these three nations and countless individuals collaborating to deliver an excellent bid, we are now in position to elevate and advance the sport like never before". Of those letters, Sports Illustrated's Brian Strauss writes: "It's uncertain how much any of that swayed the vote, but it was among the topics of conversation and contention leading into Wednesday's congress".
Even the potential of Philadelphia hosting some World Cup matches - which it didn't do when the US last hosted the tournament in 1994 - has local officials excited.
The Bid Book contains all of the detail of how we would host the World Cup in either 2018 or 22.
The United States will be joined by Canada and Mexico in hosting the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has announced. That year was also the only time the Canadian men's team has qualified for the tournament. That tournament still holds the all-time World Cup attendance record, despite there being only 24 teams involved compared to 32 today. They have had great success with all of those events, and I think all of those host cities are really excited to be part of the process.
But which cities and stadiums will host games at the tournament is still being determined.
The North American bid got 17 low-risk and three medium assessments when it comes to organizing costs, government support as well as human rights and labour standards.
Putin called Infantino a, "fighter" in hard times for FIFA and praised his commitment in fighting politics in football and corruption as well.
Each of the United Bid's 23 proposed stadiums are fully built, occupied, and operational, ensuring long‐ term use following the 2026 FIFA World CupTM.
In the closing days before the vote, Trump ― who won't be president during the 2026 World Cup, even if he wins re-election in 2020 ― promised that visiting players and fans would not face visa problems around the tournament.
Nashville has recently hosted World Cup Qualifying matches and CONCACAF Gold Cup matches. The projects that we have presented in the Bid Book will be realised.
