The U.S. women's national team set a record in the opening of their World Cup campaign against Thailand Tuesday, according to ESPN.

Morgan tied Michelle Akers' record for World Cup goals, set in the quarterfinals against Taiwan in 1991. That it ended up a tournament record - for both the women's and men's side - surely did.

The score line is the biggest ever in a Women's World Cup, eclipsing Germany's 11-0 thumping of Argentina in 2007. "Every goal matters in this tournament and that's what we were working on".

Yugoslavia's rout saved itself in a goal differential head-to-head with Scotland, which became the first program to bow out without losing a match.

If you tuned into the Men's World Cup in 2018, or 2014, or 2010, or 2006, but aren't turned into this year's Women's World Cup, it's time to reconsider.

Minutes later, Morgan's second strike would stand up when she found space in between two Thai defenders and headed home a Kelley O'Hara cross to put the US up 1-0.

USA's lead at halftime was just 3-0, but the floodgates opened just five minutes into the second half and didn't close until the final whistle.

Morgan, U.S. Soccer's 2018 Player of the Year has 106 worldwide goals.

United States of America head coach Jill Ellis says she was "in tears" as her team recorded the biggest ever victory in the Fifa Women's World Cup against Thailand.

"You want the players to leave with a good feeling, if they are in a good place mentally that is a big step".

"This is a world championship", she added.

Megan Rapinoe of U.S. celebrates her goal with her teammates.

"They were disappointed of course, they meant to make an impression in this first match and they were disappointed", coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian said. "We've got two more games to play and we need to bounce back". "Yes, they are all athletes and they will be resilient".

While the team came under criticism from some, it had more than its share of defenders. Imagine it being you out there. This is your dream of playing and then scoring in a World Cup. As in 9-0 in favor of the United States. The U.S. beat the Dominican Republic 14-0 in a 2012 Olympic qualifier in Vancouver, British Columbia. (They scored six times in the time it took to write this story, by the way).

Other pool play matches for the U.S.: Sunday vs. Chile (12 p.m.), June 20 vs. Sweden (3 p.m.). Afterward, former US goalkeeper Hole Solo called Sweden "cowards" for bunkering on defence.

The nature of the USA's emphatic start appeared to be pleasing for Ellis, who had been criticised by former goalkeeper Hope Solo in the build-up to their Group F opener.

Sweden 2, Chile 0 - Kosovare Asllani's goal after a weather delay broke a scoreless stalemate helped to spoil Chile's debut in the tournament in Rennes.
