The 19-year-old defender has attracted attention from several of Europe's most prominent clubs over the course of this season, during which he's helped Ajax to a Champions League semi-final.

Van Gaal went on to say: "I think he's a great player, but I think [Ivan] Rakitic is also a great player".

United, according to the Telegraph, have vowed to give De Ligt a starring role should he reject Barcelona move.

"Vincent Kompany is already gone and Nicolas Otamendi is not good enough".

He played down Van Gaal's comments on him: "I don't think it's a controversial comment on his part".

"I still haven't had any contact with him", De Jong said.

Other Barcelona players like Malcom, Samuel Umtiti, Thomas Vermaelen, Philippe Coutinho, Jasper Cillesen, Rafinha Alcantara and Kevin-Prince Boateng are also on their way out of the club.

Matthijs de Ligt is claimed to be "days" away from making his decision about his future, with the rebuilding project at Manchester United said to be appealing to him.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer's side are keen to hijack Barcelona's deal for De Ligt.

Although some may find it surprising that the Dutchman is calling on the youngster to join a rival of the club he used to manage, they shouldn't.

With the MEN seeming certain that the Old Trafford club do not consider De Ligt a possibility this summer.

Some fans still appreciate the stability he brought to United following the disastrous season under David Moyes in which they finished 7th in the Premier League.

And United will reportedly discover whether they have been successful or not when a decision is made in the coming days.
