"Traffic Jam" On Mount Everest As 200 Trekkers Attempt To Reach Summit

Gopal Shrestha Becomes First HIV-Infected Climber To Scale Mount Everest

Climbers wait for favorable weather forecasts to make summit attempts, and this year, there have only been two windows with five summit days so far, as Arnette detailed on his site.

Don Cash, 55, died "at the peak of Mt. Everest accomplishing his dream of summiting the 7 summits", his daughter Danielle Cook posted on Facebook on Wednesday.

Cash made it to the top of Everest but collapsed on the descent on the famed the "Hillary Step", a vertical rock face on the south side of the mountain. Cash, who is also a grandfather, died after completing his goal of climbing the highest mountain on every continent, his children told CNN affiliate KSL.

Only a few windows of good weather each May allow climbers the best chance of summiting Everest.

Meanwhile, a Nepalese Sherpa climber, Kami Rita, scaled the Mount Everest for a 24th time on Tuesday, the second such feat in just a week after breaking his own record for the most successful ascents of the world's highest peak.

In this season alone, Mount Kanchenjunga, Everest and Mount Makalu each had three deaths, while Mount Lhotse, Mount Annapurna and Mount Cho Oyu all had one. The number of issued permits could set a new record for total mountaineers in a given year, surpassing 807 people from last year. The human body is also rapidly deteriorating at that altitude, meaning most people can spend only a matter of minutes at the top, without extra oxygen supplies, before it becomes intolerable. "That was the main reason for the traffic jam at Everest".

Two women from India were among those who died.

In severe cases, fluid builds up within the lungs, brain or both.

Thursday's deaths followed two other deaths the day before which were blamed on the tailbacks to reach the 8,848m (29,030ft) peak.

"There's a long queue of climbers above Camp IV", Gyanendra Shrestha, a liaison officer at the Everest base camp, told The Himalayan Times. The exact numbers could only be confirmed on Thursday, he said. We are not less than anyone, we are capable of achieving anything, ' Nima Doma said in an interview with AFP ahead of the expedition.

"We are carrying out the search operation of the missing climber in Mount Makalu in coordination with local agents here", an official from the Indian Mission in Nepal told ANI.
