Tiger Woods still in the hunt at Valspar Championship
Mar 12 2018
Tiger Woods is understandably "excited" to have the chance of ending his long win drought at the Valspar Championship, after another impressive display in round three.
Conners smiled when he heard the cheer for Woods when he chipped in at No. 9. Predictably, the internet went wild.
Starting the day two shots behind Canadian Corey Conners at the Copperhead course at Innisbrook Resort, Woods has closed to within one, remaining in a tie for second place, at eight under, with Justin Rose and Brandt Snedeker.
It could be a different story when Woods dons the red and black on Sunday, but so far Conners has handled himself impressively. All of the millennials who wanted to know what it was like when a red shirt on a Sunday was more than just a fashion statement are about to find out.
A third birdie followed at the downhill par-4 10th hole before dropping a shot at par-3 14th after an errant 30-yard left tee shot but Woods won back the shot at the next in two-putting from some 48-feet on the front of the green at the par-5 14th.
In his sights are a shot at his 80th career victory on the PGA Tour and more momentum and madness as the Masters approaches.
"I don't want to get carried away from one good tournament, but you could see signs of him playing well and hitting it better, so, no, I'm not surprised".
When Woods returned to the competitive fray in December at the Hero World Challenge, which could best be described as a rehab start, he spoke of his dramatically improved health and a genuine desire to be back on Tour.
It remains to be seen whether Woods, whose last victory came in 2013 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, can get over the winning line on this occasion, but it should certainly be fun finding out.
Both know, however, that Woods is probably the man they're truly chasing, no matter how good Conners has been through the first three days. That's probably why I played so good.
"Of course, I will", he said smiling. Three months ago the answer would have been a hard and confident no. All that to say, this is new territory for him. I've won my share of events here and overseas and so I like to be one back or near the lead. "So nice and just been into it and into this event and I played myself right there in contention so it will be a fun Sunday". I needed something to happen. "I made a few tweaks overnight which I didn't like about yesterday". I putted really, really well on the back nine. "I'm going to try to beat all these guys".
The game face is sure to be on when he tees off at 1:50 in the second-to-last group.
