The golden labrador who worked as a service dog for President George HW Bush has been pictured resting beside his coffin, in a moving tribute.

"Mission complete", McGrath tweeted, showing Sully the dog.

Jeb Bush, sone of the 41st president and the former governor of Florida, retweeted the photo, with the simple words: "Sully has the watch". A World War II hero who gave his service revolver to a Navy lieutenant aboard the submarine that rescued him after his plane was shot down.

Sully H.W. Bush, service dog of former President George H.W. Bush, will accompany the late commander-in-chief one last time - travelling alongside his casket as it heads to Washington, DC, this week for his funeral, a report says. "Thank you for your service, Mr. President".

An arrival ceremony involving both the House and Senate will be held at 4:45 p.m. ET on Monday at the US Capitol, where Bush will lie in state in the rotunda until Wednesday morning.

A tribute website for Bush has been set up on which funeral details will be posted.

Sully will now join the facility dog program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
