Cardinal Sean O'Malley was among the countless people who watched in horror Monday as news reports captured footage of a fire tearing through the roof of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and toppling the centuries-old church's spire.

Israeli president Reuven Rivlin, right, is welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron on his arrival at the Elysee Palace in Paris on January 23, 2019.

Horrified onlookers gathered below near the Seine River to capture video and photos of the fire. "Notre Dame of Paris isn't a Paris monument or French monument or a European monument but it's really a worldwide monument".

Trump wrote on Twitter after the fire broke out Monday: "So disgusting to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris" and made suggestions for how first responders should tackle it. There were renovations happening in the cathedral, and it has been suggested that the fire was caused by some sort of accident tied to the renovation work.

"In terms of the structure and rebuilding, what isn't lost can be repaired and one can restore the general image of the cathedral by rebuilding walls with modern stone or replacing the carpentry roof with modern wood", Robert A. Maxwell, a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts in NY, said in an email.

In 2012, the Archbishop of Paris and the Diocese of Paris founded "The Friends of Notre Dame" to raise funds for the structural deterioration, with renovation and fix efforts ongoing.

France's historic Notre Dame Cathedral erupted in flames Monday ahead of the celebration of the holy day of Easter. A thought for all Catholics and for all French.

The cause of the fire is now unknown.

It was not immediately clear what started that massive fire on the roof of the 12th century cathedral that toppled its spire and sent massive plumes of smoke into the air. Emotion for the whole nation.

"Last January, I looked out over the Parisian skyline, all the more beautified by the cathedral's spire", he added. "Like all our compatriots, I'm sad tonight to see this part of ourselves burn".

French media quoted the Paris fire brigade saying the blaze is "potentially linked" to the renovation work.

Its 100-metre-long (330-foot) roof, of which a large section was consumed in the first hour of the blaze, was one of the oldest such structures in Paris, according to the cathedral's website.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said at the scene that some of many artworks that were in the cathedral had been taken out and were being put in safe storage.

It's also famous in literature - the centrepoint of Victor Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
