Spain's manager sacked just one day before World Cup

Spain sacked head coach Julen Lopetegui after he was named the new Real Madrid boss - two days before their opening World Cup match against Portugal.

The club on Tuesday poached Spanish national team coach Julen Lopetegui just two days before the start of the World Cup in Russian Federation.

"Real Madrid look for the best coach, that is fine by me".

At a severely delayed press conference at Spain's World Cup base in Krasnodar, Spanish football federation (RFEF) chief Luis Rubiales expressed dismay at the timing of events that threaten to derail Spain's World Cup chances. They will also have to try and negotiate their way out of a group containing Iran and Morocco if they are to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

He was waved off by a number of Spain's coaching team, though three will follow him to Real: Assistant Pablo Sanz, fitness coach Oscar Garro and mental coach Juan Carlos Alvarez Campillo.

Spain football association announced technical director Fernando Hierro as the national coach, hours after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui. But the federation can not be left outside the negotiation of one of its employees, and find out just five minutes before a public announcement. There is a way of acting that must be fulfilled. "If I wasn't sure that we couldn't have a great tournament, I wouldn't be here", Hierro said. [However], this has been done without knowledge of the RFEF. I have a very close relationship with the players, as with Julen, it's a very complex situation, the most complex one I could find. "I have spoken to them and I can assure you that the players and the the new coaching staff will do everything possible to lead the team as far as possible [in Russia], but it's a complicated situation".

"You can't change two days of work in two days and a large part of the technical team is staying here with us too. We have been compelled to make this decision".

"I admire and respect Lopetegui a lot". I have no opinion about how Real Madrid act. I know they're going to give it all they've got, 100%.

"I found out [about the deal with Madrid] five minutes beforehand and asked for nothing to be done, that I was getting a plane and coming here". This was confirmed on Tuesday, with Rubiales said to have only been made aware of the development minutes before it was publicly announced. In the RFEF we can not not fulfil our own values. "We are left in a very hard situation", he said.
