He requires assistance to breathe and will need additional surgeries, his family said through a statement. His doctors cautioned, however, that he remained in critical condition and would "be in the hospital for some time". It once again has galvanized a nation in gratitude for the first responders who likely saved so many lives.

The wife of wounded GOP congressman Steve Scalise says she is thankful for all the prayers and warm wishes her family has received since her husband was shot at a baseball practice. Democrats sent the trophy they earned to Scalise's office after the game.

Scalise is still in critical condition but is doing better, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center where the congressman is now confined.

"It's going to show our country's side of resilience", said Oscar Santillana, who's also going to the game.

The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

Historically the game brings an intense political rivalry onto the baseball field and this year will be no different. Scalise will undergo more operations.

The president made his comments as he spoke in Miami to announce a new policy on Cuba.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

Players on both sides - which includes Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) - will wear LSU caps in honor of Scalise, a noted Tiger fan.

Twenty-six Democratic members of Congress and 33 of their Republican colleagues are signed up to play in Thursday's game - a tradition that's been around since 1909.

President Trump delivered a video message before Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game where he told the participants, "By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy".

The game, a charity match between teams of Democrats and Republicans played almost every year since 1909, usually draws about 10,000. Steve Scalise is in leadership and that's the only reason there was security detail there at all.

Scalise represents the state's 1st Congressional District, which includes Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Terrebonne parishes.

GOP members were in the middle of an early-morning practice Wednesday when a gunman - suspected to be the now-deceased 66-year-old James Hodgkinson - opened fire on the people on the field, injuring Scalise, two U.S. Capitol Police agents, a current GOP staffer and a former GOP staffer.

At a press conference, President Trump says that wounded Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.

Crossing party lines after the shooting that left four people injured, including House Majority Whip Steve #Scalise, Democrat and Republican lawmakers still pushed through with the 57th Congressional Baseball Game Thursday at Nationals Park.
