Sen: Following election-day rebuke from Trump, Sanford falls in GOP primary

One wrong turn - or in Sanford's case, many - and they could endure the wrath of a president who is quick to attack detractors as enemies, even those from his own party.

Sanford has never lost an election in SC, including two terms in the US House after the affair surfaced.

Mark Sanford lost the Republican nomination for his congressional seat to an opponent who attacked his criticism of President Donald Trump. "The playing field of ideas that many of us came into in the class of '94.it's devolved to: are you for or against the President, are you for or against Trump?". For the most part, Trump has stayed in the background.

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA", the president tweeted.

As governor in 2009, Sanford famously disclosed that he had been carrying on an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina. The incident did result in censure from the South Carolina General Assembly, but Sanford did not resign over it.

But as the executive jet flew over the Pacific Ocean, the president - as he often does - bucked that advice. Trump endorsed Arrington, a first term state legislator.

In South Carolina, former governor Mark Sanford, who rehabilitated his image after a weird scandal some years to get elected to Congress, was a surprise loser in his primary after President Trump came out against him. Though he has a generally conservative voting record, his public comments against Trump made him a target.

A spokesman for the House speaker, Paul Ryan, told the Guardian that "the speaker supports Mark Sanford in the race tonight". Sanford also said in a 2017 interview that Trump "has fanned the flames of intolerance".

Loudermilk said it's best for lawmakers to take their concerns privately to the White House, as he said he has done behind the scenes on Trump's proposed tariffs.

With 1 percent of precincts in the 1st District reporting, Sanford remains in a tight race with Arrington.

In North Dakota, Rep. Kevin Cramer won the Republican nomination for Senate and will face Democratic incumbent Heidi Heitkamp, who had no primary challenger.

Democrats will also be watching the outcomes of Virginia's 2nd District (GOP Rep. Scott Taylor), 7th District (GOP Rep. Dave Brat) and 5th District (retiring GOP Rep. Tom Garrett), where they hope to be competitive in the fall. Kaine for being "a total stiff" who is "weak on crime and borders, and wants to raise your taxes through the roof".

Most widely respected election analysis shops, including Inside Elections with Nathan Gonzales, are forecasting Kaine's reelection in the commonwealth. If no candidate wins an outright majority, ballot-counters eliminate the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes and redistribute that person's support to the runners-up - and so on until one candidate comes out on top.

After Air Force One was on the ground, the president continued what he is selling as a victory lap following the Kim summit. But during the campaign, he ran ads saying how often he voted with the president. She said in 2016 she couldn't support Trump for president after tape emerged of him boasting in 2005 about groping women's genitals. "North Korea has great potential for the future!"

Elisabeth Boyle, a Greenville native and McMaster supporter, said she had backed McMaster's 2010 bid and felt he needed more time to accomplish the things he wanted to do for SC.
