Samuel L. Jackson to Star in Chris Rock's 'Saw' Reboot
Jul 09 2019
"When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in", Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said.
The new Saw movie just keeps getting weirder. The new Saw film is now in production, and it has been announced that Rock will be joined in the cast by Samuel L. Jackson.
Interestingly, this is a change in genre for Samuel L Jackson and Chris Rock's careers.
The "Saw" franchise spawned eight films from the 2004 original, all the way to 2017's "Jigsaw".
The veteran actor, 70, is set to play the father of Chris Rock's police detective character in a revamped version of the grizzly crime series. We don't know hardly anything about this movie, or what it'll do to the meticulously-maintained Saw timeline.
Longtime "Saw" filmmakers Mark Burg and Oren Koules returned to produce "Saw". Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg wrote the screenplay. While the twist endings, deadly Rube Goldberg-inspired traps, and warped sense of morality usually make for a fun time at the movies, the series has been putting out some pretty underwhelming offerings with its last few outings.
The film now does not have a release date, but I wouldn't be surprised if it hit theaters either next October-which is the traditional release window for Saw movies-or if Lionsgate attempts to event-ize this new version, it could arrive with a splashy summer 2020 release date. At the very least it should be interesting, no?
