HBO's fantasy epic "Game of Thrones" led the field for television's prestigious Primetime Emmy awards on Thursday, with a whopping 22 nominations, including one for best drama series. He is also nominated for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for "Saturday Night Live".
The streaming service's maneuvering (and not incidentally, expensive Emmy campaigning) paid off with 112 nominations - a significant increase over a year ago, edging HBO's 108.
"Stranger Things" executive producer and director Shawn Levy said the streaming service was a joy to work with. The two drama series picked up 13 and 12 nods respectively, and both were recognized in the coveted top drama category.
The 70th annual Emmy Awards will be hosted by "Saturday Night Live" stars Colin Jost and Michael Che live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Monday, Sept. 17 (8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT) on NBC.
"You are basically writing a show about the way you pray that the world won't go, and then it starts going that way". Game Of Thrones was the dominant series.
The actresses who squeezed Kidman and Watts out of the supporting actress in a limited series category were: Adina Porter (American Horror Story: Cult); Penelope Cruz and Judith Light (The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story); Letitia Wright (Black Museum); Merritt Wever (Godless); and Sara Bareilles (Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert).
It's also worthy of note that Donald Glover, who is up for lead actor in a comedy, landed 16 nominations for Atlanta, including outstanding comedy alongside Barry, Black-ish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, GLOW, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Silicon Valley, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
