Although they ended the season with a run of three unbeaten games, prior to that sequence West Ham had achieved just one win in eight, with Moyes offering no clarity on whether he would be allowed to remain in his job next season.

Moyes exceeded all expectations at West Ham having succeeded Slaven Bilic at the tail end of 2017 by steering the Hammers clear of relegation and into a 13th-place finish, largely as a result of taking seven points from United's final three matches.

However, West Ham fans have never been fully convinced by Moyes and likewise neither has owner David Sullivan, who with co-chairman David Gold, has been mulling over their options.

"I'm told it's "touch and go" whether he stays at West Ham".

I also understand that Sullivan already knows who he wants and Benitez, a man who he has nearly landed before, is his preferred candidate.

"We've shown we're trying to improve. We'll wait and see when we meet up".

Has Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez given hope to Everton and West Ham of signing him?

"They made me some offers to stay here for a few more years, plus I have to manage my family: if I chose to go to Newcastle and stay there, even in the Championship, it's also because of my family".

Former Manchester City supervisor Manuel Pellegrini can be on a shortlist of candidates however Fonseca maybe has the benefit of being a youthful coach with a rising repute.
