Hopman Cup: Roger Federer & Belinda Bencic retain title for Switzerland

Roger Federer has become the most successful player in Hopman Cup history after leading Switzerland to a 2-1 win over Germany in an enthralling final of the mixed teams tournament in Perth Saturday, January 5.

The Swiss ran out winners in the "fast" format mixed doubles in Perth, Australia, with Federer and Bencic clinching the match 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 to retain the title they won past year.

Federer and Bencic previous year defeated the same German pair of Zverev and Kerber in the final.

"First of all, congratulations to you guys again", the world No.4 said with a wry grin, a shrug and a head-shake of resignation.

"We share a lot of tournaments together, but it's not the same as when you play together or share the same court".

The Hopman Cup's future could be decided within weeks.

Zverev thanked a few people - staff, fans, organisers, volunteers etc. - before turning his attention back to the match. I hope we can come back here many more times. Especially how it ended.

German world number two Kerber, who has reached successive finals in the past two Hopman Cups, was saddened by the news.

"We really wanted to win as a team", Zverev said.

As the capacity crowd chuckled, so to did Federer who was beaming with delight in the background.

"What the hell are you laughing at right now?" he said as the laughs kept flowing.

Zverev added: "What a nice guy, huh?"

Zverev and Kerber were despondent after the loss and the former said it was a tough pill to swallow.

The 37-year-old used the Hopman Cup as his launching pad for winning the past two Australian Opens, the first of which in 2017 ended an nearly five-year Grand Slam drought for Federer.

Roger Federer has declared that world No 1 Novak Djokovic is the man to beat at the Australian Open.

It was a flawless 6-4 6-2 win over ATP Finals champion Zverev.

"It is good to finish on a singles performance like this, I was able to come up with some good serve and volley and it all worked out today". I'm sure that he and his team are doing everything they possibly can so he can start to compete again.
