They were killed in missile strikes close the to capital Damascus where Syrian regime's troops, Iranian forces and Hezbollah fighters are stationed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Israeli military had earlier said it had responded to two rockets fired from Syria at the part of Mount Hermon in the occupied Golan Heights.

Israel attacked a number of Syrian targets overnight on Sunday.

Syrian anti-aircraft defences fired against "enemy missiles" from Israel targeting positions in southwest Damascus, the official SANA news agency quoted a military source as saying.

Most of the Israeli strikes have targeted shipments of sophisticated weapons being transferred to Iranian proxies as well as their arms depots, headquarters and weapons systems in Syria. Israeli media said that sirens warning of incoming rockets were not activated.

Israel has admitted to having carried out one hundred of strikes in Syria against Iranian and Hezbollah targets and is suspected of carrying out hundreds of others.

"Yesterday I held security consultations in wake of the firing at the Golan Heights in which I instructed the IDF to take strong action", the prime minister said.

It was a rare public acknowledgement of Israeli strikes in Syria soon after they happened but is the second in a little over a week, both sparked by claims that fire was directed at Israel from inside Syria.

On Monday, Israel's military said it attacked a Syrian anti-aircraft position that had fired on one of its warplanes, and Syrian state media said a soldier had been killed in the incident. According to the Observatory, 21 people, mainly Iranians, were killed in these raids.
