State health officials say a Missouri man who traveled to Haiti has the state's first confirmed case of the Zika virus . In an unrelated study Friday, researchers found that Zika can infect embryonic cells that help form the brain, and harm them in two ways: killing some outright and damaging the ability of others to divide and grow in number.
The virus typically causes mild symptoms, but the risk is far greater for pregnant women because of a possible link to a birth defect and neurological problems. Much remains unknown about Zika, including whether the virus actually causes microcephaly. Aylward said that recently published studies in the Lancet on microcephaly and by the US Centers for Disease Control on Guillain-Barre strengthened the case that the mosquito-borne Zika virus is responsible.
Dr. Karin Nielsen of the University of California, Los Angeles says the study suggests Zika can act on multiple fronts. In the course of the work, the researchers established which of those cell types was vulnerable to the Zika virus .
Kelly, who has spent a total of 520 days in space now, spoke n his last interview from the space station of the things he looks forward to back on earth - such as fresh food, and sitting at a table without worrying about his food floating away.
Christie noted that despite jokes from online commenters, he wasn't forced into giving any coerced statements on Trump's behalf. I'm not gonna be down there, I'm not gonna be gazing at him with longing eyes like I'm in love with the guy standing behind him on the stage anymore.
NASA's goal is to send a manned mission to Mars by 2035 - a vast roundtrip journey that could take 2½-years. Though this is obviously a quirky (and temporary) side effect of spending so much time in space, Kelly will nearly certainly enjoy his brief time looking down on his brother.
