Reports of multiple casualties after incident in downtown Manhattan

Eight people were killed and several others were injured in New York City Tuesday afternoon.

Police in New York City are responding to a report of gunfire a few blocks from the World Trade Center memorial in Manhattan.

SEVERAL people have been gunned down in lower Manhattan, cops have said. The department said it was unclear whether anyone was shot or whether the injured were all struck by the vehicle.

"What happened was there was a auto crash... he came out of one of the cars". "I heard four to six gunshots - everybody starts running".

ABC News reports the truck hit a school bus.

The suspect was screaming while exiting the vehicle, Associated Press reported.

At least two bodies could be seen lying motionless on the path beneath tarps near mangled bicycles. Photos show a smashed up Home Depot rental utility vehicle.

Counter-terror police were searching the truck for explosives.

The counter-terror unit is urging people to avoid the West Side Highway area as bomb squads are called into the area. "I saw a lot of blood over there". Two others died at the hospital and 11 people have serious but non-life threatening injuries, police say.

"What I saw was that the driver - he didn't look like he was bleeding", said Cruz. The FBI is now investigating at the scene, according to CBS. The suspect then got out of the vehicle, displayed "imitation firearms" and was shot by police and taken into custody, officials say.
