Rallies supporting end to funding for Planned Parenthood set

Carrying signs such as "Defund Planned Parenthood", the demonstrations in St. Paul and Mankato were two of hundreds scheduled nationwide calling for the elimination of federal funding for organization.

Scholar said the event is meant to be a peaceful representation of those who support Planned Parenthood's services.

The original anti-abortion protest, created to call attention to Planned Parenthood and strip it of federal funding, was organized by Citizens for a Pro-Life Society and took place at Planned Parenthood centers across MI. "We're talking about taking a life rather than an operation to help save a life".

Several standing beside a large green "Defund Planned Parenthood" banner at the building's entrance, attempted a group prayer for everyone present, their words lost in chants of "This is what democracy looks like". In all, more than 60 pro-life organizations are lined up behind the rally effort.

Krista Loveless described herself as a longtime proponent of Planned Parenthood. "It felt extremely personal" to hear about the anti-Planned Parenthood pickets, she said, after coming back from "this great movement that was all about equality and women's rights and healthcare".

The News-Leader reported in November that the Springfield clinic of Planned Parenthood offers preventive care and abortion referrals, but has never provided abortion services.

She said she thinks the majority of people at MSU and Springfield lean toward being anti-abortion, but "it's just not a popular opinion to have in the media or in society".

"The Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida released a statement in response to the "#ProtestPP Coalition" that said it serves more than 40,000 people a year in the area and that more than 90 percent of it services are related to preventative care.

"I just want to emphasize that we love women". I also feel like Planned Parenthood is an incredible service provider, but they're not a political entity.

Leslie Hanks, an anti-abortion demonstrator in Denver, told Brasch he hopes President Trump "does the right thing and I hope that Planned Parenthood is defunded, but that's the very least that should happen".

"I've been planning on getting more active, and I thought, 'What better time than now?' the Garden City resident said".
