Qualcomm's next-gen Snapdragon 865 mobile chip focuses on 5G
Dec 04 2019
"5G will open new and exciting opportunities to connect, compute, and communicate in ways we've yet to imagine and we are happy to be a key player driving the adoption of 5G around the world", said Qualcomm Incorporated President, Cristiano Amon.
Snapdragon Summit is held annually, giving Qualcomm the chance to talk about its Snapdragon hardware, to announce and showcase the tech that will be in smartphones and other devices in 2020 and beyond. But what devices will feature the latest and greatest Snapdragon chip? But, our sights are set on Qualcomm's first-ever chipsets with an integrated 5G modem - the Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G.
As for artificial intelligence, the Snapdragon 865 sports Qualcomm's 5th-generation AI engine, which is capable of 15 total operations per second - twice what the AI engine in the Snapdragon 855 was capable of. That means the X55 will be able to use 5G both for data and non-data purposes; in contrast, the non-standalone-only X50 only used 5G for data.
What we do know at this time, however, is that the Snapdragon 865 is being billed as the true "flagship" SoC, and that it includes the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.
And yes, there's good news if you liked the thought of Qualcomm's in-screen fingerprint reader but thought it needed work.
But Qualcomm is also teasing that there's going to be some gaming-related news, having tweeted that a special guest is going to be helping with the big reveal. Nokia, on the other hand, will use Snapdragon 765 SoC on future platforms.
Qualcomm does not provide details about the chips to the keynote of tomorrow, but the company did provide some basic information this morning.
He did say that the two new Snapdragon platforms will "lead and scale" 5G and AI in 2020. Expect news to break regarding the first 865-powered phones at or right before MWC 2020 in February.
Look for the Snapdragon 865 to add even more capabilities.
We'll have further particulars on the Snapdragon 865 and 765 tomorrow because the Snapdragon Tech Summit continues, so examine again for extra info quickly.
In the same press release, OPPO also confirmed that an upcoming smartphone, likely the Reno 3 Pro 5G, will launch in Q1 2020 with the Snapdragon 865.
