Alabama joins Clemson Oklahoma and Georgia in playoff

Kickoff for the CFP semifinal game at the Rose Bowl presented by Northwestern Mutual between the third-ranked Bulldogs (12-1) and the Big 12 champion Sooners (12-1) will be at 4 p.m. ET and be televised on ESPN.

While the college football world argued about the committee's decision on the fourth team in the playoff, nobody doubts the credentials of the two stellar programs getting together in this matchup. That same mentality is what has gotten them a plane ticket to Pasadena to face Georgia in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.

Cities interested in hosting the national championship game must submit a bid, in a process similar to bidding for a Super Bowl site. That means the Bulldogs will play in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. on New Year's Day.

College football has a different type of selection Sunday, a smaller bracket, and dozens of other games that make people argue about how much they matter. The Crimson Tide lost 26-14 to Auburn to end the regular season, but its top win was against an LSU team outside the top 10. UCF finished the 2013 season 10th. The ACC is one of just two conferences that has placed a team in the College Football Playoff or the BCS Championship in each of the last five years. The committee identifies and compares the top teams, then votes them into the rankings.

Washington did move up to No. 11 and that will be good enough to get the Pac-12 a second team, along with champion USC, into New Year's Six bowl game.

Bowl Game Locations:Semifinal playoff games rotate between the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

While it appears likely that the teams will play in the Rose Bowl, an official announcement has not been made yet.

October 16, 2013 - The names of the 13 members of the selection committee are announced. Louisville, which will play in a bowl game for the 22nd time, owns a 10-10-1 record in previous appearances.

July 14, 2014 - The CFP National Championship trophy is unveiled. This bowl game was previously known as the Russell Athletic Bowl.

Alabama edged Ohio State to grab the fourth spot in the playoff. The other CFP semifinal will feature top-ranked Clemson (12-1) versus fourth-ranked Alabama (11-1) in the Sugar Bowl on January 1 in New Orleans.

In Oklahoma's biggest win of the year, a 31-16 victory at Ohio State in September, the Sooners' defense neutralized the Buckeyes' offense and held them to almost 200 yards below their season average.
