Southampton player Nathan Redmond has jumped to the defence of Pep Guardiola after the Manchester City boss had some animated words with the Saints star after Wednesday night's game at the Etihad. Yes he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me.

Strangely, Guardiola cited an example that featured his own Bayern Munich player, Kimmich, with whom he had a similar altercation after a game in March 2015 although the City manager still insisted he meant no disrespect to Southampton or their manager Mauricio Pellegrino, his former Barcelona team mate.

A new contract was likely at the end of the current campaign but City will accelerate talks as Sterling has made awesome progress under Guardiola.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling is set to become the Premier League's highest paid player with a new £300k-per-week contract, The Sun have reported. "That's why we've done that in the last period". "I didn't know him last season, I realised how good he is" was what Guardiola claimed before Redmond came to his support. If people don't believe me, we should cancel our press conference.

When quizzed whether he had advised his players to play down their social media activity, he smiled: "They are free to do what they want, but when they post something, then they might have comments, insulting them or whatever - but if they want do it, do it, no problem. It does no favours to the sports journalists in the game that I like, happily work with and genuinely respect".

'When you play one game in 15 it's not easy, but the team will try to support him to try to play well.

Manchester City's unbeaten start to the season has left Pep Guardiola believing that his side are capable of beating anybody. Today, he could not attack because they defended all the time.

"[I told him] how good a player he is", Guardiola said.
