Pep Guardiola calls for calm as Manchester City chase treble

Following an interview with City's official website last week, Mendy played down suggestions he was targeting a return in the April 7 derby against Manchester United but he was photographed working with the ball alongside the rest of Pep Guardiola's squad on Monday.

City's two Monday fixtures so far this season have brought significant disappointment for the City manager; they dropped their only home league points to date as Everton drew at the Etihad Stadium in August, and saw their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple ended last month when League One promotion candidates Wigan knocked them out of the FA Cup.

There have been reports of Pep's agent being in Manchester this week to discuss a new contract, but the City boss denied them.

Basel still lost the tie 5-2 on aggregate but their victory over a much-changed City side was nonetheless a huge shock, especially since the Swiss champions had lost four out of five games before the trip to England.

Asked of his side's injury situation, he replied: "Some of them are better". "I just prefer to play at the weekend, when all the other teams are playing".

"I know everyone wants to anticipate the situations, when we will win the title". But we are going to work on that in these two days.

"Maybe it was because we had less pressure, that we had nothing to lose", suggested Elyounoussi.

"Stoke away is always complicated".

Speaking on Tuesday, Guardiola said: "I accept the decision because I have to do but that doesn't mean I agree or not, or they are right or not". They have already won the League Cup and are also through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. "That's why we have to be focused on what we have to do".

Pep revealed that Fernandinho and Sterling are in good condition, while Fabian Delph is rated at 50/50 to appear on Monday.

'I don't like to play on Monday because the weekend everybody is involved and when the weekend is over, we have to play, ' Guardiola said.

"Instead of being here, where we have been fighting for eight months with the weather, we will go there and train the same way but in better conditions", he said.
