Patrick Reed is a new kind of Masters champ

Rory's story to come full circle? Mc Ilroy primed for Augusta glory

The victor of the Masters not only receives a green jacket, but a lot of money.

As of the time of this writing, he's four behind Patrick Reed - who's been living on the edge a bit through the first handful of holes and is probably lucky to be at level par for the day.

The mood all afternoon screamed out, "Anyone but Patrick".

While Reed had established his championship credentials with five PGA Tour wins and runnerup finish at the last major the 2017 PGA Championships at Quail Hollow, Reed, who had never had round under 70 at Augusta National, was not rated among the hot favorites when the year's first major got underway. "Go play golf." And I was able to get through it mentally and put together a solid 71.

The 14-time major champion, who insisted as he set out to close a 13-shot deficit on Saturday that he was looking for a "special weekend", opened with back-to-back bogeys on the way to a 72.

From there, he chipped in from 80 feet.

The only exception was Jordan Spieth's British Open win past year. "To be able to have that chance to walk up 18 with a chance to win, or maybe you have it closed out and that's your walk to victory".

The applause, however, sounded more like acceptance than celebration. "It's something that I needed to learn, especially at a place like this, how important it is to stick to what I believe". Jeannette and Bill Reed - who are Augusta residents - were not present at their son's wedding of the same year.

The tournament will feature 72 of the top women's players in the world with the final round being held at Augusta the Saturday before the Masters.

Danny Willett wasn't the patron's choice in 2016 when he took advantage of Spieth's misfortunes at the 12th hole. I feel like that I've played some golf that I need to play in order to get to where I want to be, and that's to be the best golfer in the world. He helped bring home two national championship trophies in 2010 and 2011. Or for Reed to point at McIlroy if he pulls off a clutch moment.

With a raft of talented players stepping up, Rickie Fowler left Augusta convinced his turn was coming. The first two rounds will be played at another course in Augusta, Champions Retreat. McIlroy watched an errant tee shot at the final hole ricochet back into the fairway, setting up a birdie that could have easily been a bogey.

Love compared Reed's competitive instinct with Ian Poulter, the outspoken spiritual leader of the European team for much of the past decade. It's just a way of God basically saying, let's see if you have it.

Reed won the green jacket, but will also take home almost $2 million.

AU golf coach Jack O'Keefe does not know Reed personally, he never coached him. You saw it on Sunday, at one of the best Masters of them all.

Armed with a three-shot lead after 54 holes, Reed, the fiery, confrontational raging bull, channeled his emotions, held his nerve and called upon his considerable golf skills to withstand a host of the game's best players on a tense, wild Masters Sunday that had the staff handling the famous white scoreboards working overtime. "Every hole it seemed like I had a really good look at it, but couldn't get anything to go".

Whatever the truth, Reed, 27, will not discuss it publicly.
