Ezzaddin Abd El Hafeezh Tamimi was severely wounded when soldiers shot him during a raid in the village, which is the home of the Tamimi family and is well known for its activism against the Israeli occupation.

Clashes erupted after Israeli troops stormed a number of houses there.

The Palestinian Information Ministry said in a statement that "the execution of Tamimi in cold blood, with three bullets at close range, proves how much our people are in need of worldwide protection against the Israeli war machine".

During a second, open meeting, Kobi Eliraz, a senior aide to Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, said that Israeli officials are "familiar with the attempt to takeover lands, which is directed by the Palestinian Authority".

Palestinian political factions are calling for a "million-man" demonstration on Friday to show solidarity with Jerusalem and demand an end to the decade-long Israeli/Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip. The protests along the fortified fence that separates Gaza from Israeli territory have become an acute flash point in the intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This latest incident occurred amid the daily violence on the Israel-Gaza border under the banner of the March of Return, orchestrated by Hamas, the Islamic terror group that rules the Strip and calls for Israel's destruction.

Israel's use of potentially lethal force against the protesters has drawn global criticism.

Demonstrators also chanted anti-American slogans to condemn the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem.
