Padmavati director Bhansali should be tried for treason: BJP leader Arjun Gupta
Nov 11 2017
"It's unfortunate to see the personal point of view expressed by an advisory panel member of the CBFC against Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali". Gupta, who is the General Secretary of the Uttar Bharatiya Morcha, BJP, said something "disgusting" is being done in the pursuit of earning money and for boosting one's career.
The top court suggested that the Censor Board should take an independent view over the issue, saying it can't substitute role of CBFC. "We have respect for Bhansali as an individual and artist", Joshi told IANS.
In a letter to the Home Minister, Gupta has asked that Bhansali should be tried for "treason" for distorting history in Padmavati.
The road ahead is not going to be easy for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, no matter how many times he releases a video reiterating that Padmavati has no dream sequence or any other objectionable content. I have already rejected this claim and also given written proof of this.
A bench of three judges Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachu said to the petitioner that CBFC have sufficient guidelines to grant certificate for films.
He reportedly wrote, "The whole country, not just the Rajput community, is standing against it".
On being intimated that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was yet to certify the movie, the Bench said, "this court should not exercise its writ jurisdiction in such situation".
Besides seeking a stay on the release of the movie, the plea had also sought setting up of a committee of eminent historians to check the veracity of the script to prevent any inaccuracy in portrayal of Rani Padmavati.
Bhansali has repeatedly clarified that there are no scenes between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji in the film which can hurt sentiments of the people.
