Oscars 2019 Nominations: 13 Biggest Shocks, Snubs & Surprises

The Oscars will be held on February 24 this year and producers have faced a challenging few months to get there

Songs from "A Star Is Born", "Black Panther", "RBG", "Mary Poppins Returns" and "The Ballad of Lester Scruggs" were nominated for Best Song for the 2019 Academy Awards, announced Tuesday morning, while "BlacKkKlansman", "Black Panther", "If Beale Street Could Talk", "Isle of Dogs" and "Mary Poppins Returns" received nods for Best Score.

On Tuesday, Spanish-language drama "Roma" from director Alfonso Cuarón also became the first film distributed by a streaming service to earn a spot in the coveted best picture category. And they left two open spots on the Best Picture possible-field-of-ten which DEFINITELY should have been filled this year.

Lanthimos' period romp "The Favourite" resounded most in the acting categories thanks to its trio of actresses: Olivia Colman in the best actress category, and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone in supporting.

Hollywood woke to the news of the highly-anticipated Oscar nominations.

The last woman nominated in that category was Catalina Sandino Moreno for Maria Full of Grace in 2005. Also, with SO many creatives booking Netflix deals these days, you have to imagine the actors, directors, and increasingly producers, don't really care about streaming bias.

Civil rights dramedy and surprise three-time Globes victor "Green Book" moved up in the conversation over the weekend when it won best film at the Producers Guild of America awards.

For many pundits, the thousands of voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are at a crossroads: do they go with Cuaron´s auteur masterpiece, or a quality crowd-pleaser that raked in oodles of money? She remains the only black woman to receive the honor.

Black Panther managed to pick up seven nominations overall, and will battle against A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, BlacKkKlansman, Roma and Vice for Best Picture. The 2018 Oscars can do what the 1989 Oscars didn't and recognize Spike Lee as one of the best American filmmakers working today.

The season's steadiest contender - Cooper's "A Star Is Born" - looked potentially unbeatable until it got beat.
