San Marcos Police Officer Kenneth Copeland who was shot and killed Monday leaves behind a wife and four children

A statement issued by San Marcos, Texas, officials said 58-year-old Copeland died Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, after being shot multiple times by a suspect while Copeland was serving a warrant in Central Texas. "Please join Angela and me as we pray for the officer's family, the people of San Marcos, and for our law enforcement officers around the state". "I ask that all Texans continue to join Cecilia and I in prayer for officer Copeland's family during this hard time".

The San Marcos police department say they are dealing with this as best as they can. Officials said that though he was wearing a protective vest, Copeland later succumbed to his wounds at Central Texas Medical Center.

The officer's shooter was shot during a standoff and taken to an Austin hospital for treatment. He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows that we're short-handed and need the help.

Chief Stapp said other SMPD officers and the Hays County SWAT tried to negotiate with the suspect to get him out of the house peacefully. "They are simply trying to protect us from harm", said City Manager Bert Lumbreras. Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department.

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District said four area schools were placed on lockdown after the shooting. "We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day".
