Obama loses more than 2 million Twitter followers amid crackdown

While it can not be said for certain that the fluctuation in follower counts is attributable to the follower purge, CTVNews.ca's analysis of these accounts show there has been some considerable change among some of the country's most-followed politicians and political accounts. Here are the most prominent Pakistani celebrities on Twitter and the number of followers they lost.

Union minister Smriti Irani, who has, of late, been lying low on Twitter, lost close to 40,000 followers (8.19 million) while minister without portfolio Arun Jaitley was down by over 50,000 followers (13 million).

Twitter made the move as part of its "ongoing and global effort to build trust and encourage healthy conversation on Twitter". On 11 July, the follower count was 26.68 million and now the figure is 26.55 million. There can be two reasons for that either fake accounts were bought to increase the user base, or the media team of PITB instead of doing the right ad campaign awarded it to some agency which was managing fake accounts.

This week, we'll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally.

Twitter says for an average user, the follower count is likely to drop by 4 but for those having over thousands of followers the effect can be quite significant as is the case with Modi.

Katy Perry has maintained her place as the most followed person on Twitter.

Former President Obama lost more than 2 million followers on Twitter this week as the social platform removed inactive and locked accounts from follower counts, according to a preliminary review by The Hill.

The microblogging site explained that it has been locking accounts when it detected sudden changes in account behaviour. "In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in", Twitter announced on Wednesday. Justin Timberlake rounds out the top 10 accounts with the biggest followings, but he's lost around 1.8 million overnight.

Well, it is now happening and people have started noticing the drop in follower accounts.
