Moving the money around together

"Our mission is to bring the world closer together", Naomi Gleit, Facebook's vice president of social good, said in a blog post announcing the 2 billion user milestone.

Facebook says over the coming days it will launch a personalized video to "celebrate bringing the world closer together". "It's an honor to be on this journey with you", Zuckerberg wrote.

More than a billion people take part in "groups" at Facebook each month and more than 800 million people "like" something at the social network on an average day, she added.

Mr. Zuckerberg spoke to a Chicago audience on June 22 about his plan to use Facebook's cultural reach to shape communities. We're not done yet and we will continue working to give people a voice and help people connect", Zuckerberg said on his own Facebook page.

And with almost 2 billion people around the world on Facebook today, he might have a chance to make it happen.

The king of social media now boasts over two billion global users. By the end of that year it would top 1 million users, eventually hitting 1 billion in 2012.

Facebook, Inc is focused on building products that enable people to connect and share through mobile devices, personal computers and other surfaces.

But it's not just Facebook that is attracting the masses; its other social media properties are also booming.

In comparison, YouTube is a distant second at 1.5 Billion users.

But Facebook has often been criticized over its privacy practices and the way in which it allows advertisers to access and use its massive trove of user data to unethically or unlawfully target or exclude certain people and groups.

"In the past year, the complexity of the issues we've seen has outstripped our existing processes for governing the community", Zuckerberg wrote, pointing to incidents like the removal of a famous Vietnam War photograph and the live police shooting video of Philando Castile (both of which were later returned to the site). Seriously, there are "only" about 3.5 billion people on the internet.
