Notre Dame vs Duke

Virginia Tech men’s basketball

Notre Dame will learn its fate as an at-large candidate on Selection Sunday.

When the Irish lost 88-66 at Duke in late January during a seven-game skid, Colson and Farrell were both out. He returned a week ago, and played two games prior to the tournament.

Duke has its hands full with this Notre Dame team tomorrow.

Notre Dame had more second-chance points with 10, compared to Virginia Tech's 4. How refreshing it was, then, to hear Brey all but wave the white flag afterward. "They just came to work every single day". This tempting but inconsistent team is headed to the NIT.

"He's a flopper and he flopped really hard, sold it to the refs", Clarke said in a one-on-one with Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

"After he gets a few buckets and starts making that face, the mean mug down the face, you're in trouble", Trent said. "This was the most rewarding championship I think we've had".

Notre Dame has an unusual case, obviously.

Farrell finished with a game-high 22 points, including a 4-for-11 mark from beyond the arc, followed by 14 from junior guard Rex Pflueger, who hauled in a game-high nine rebounds, and 12 points from Colson.

Had the Irish defeated one of IN or Ball State out-of-conference and one of North Carolina or Louisville IN South Bend, which both came down to the wire, Mike Brey's group likely is sitting okay heading into Selection Sunday.

And three Quadrant 3 losses.

"They do the talking in the huddles now", Brey said. We'll be ready for anything.

"I'm definitely going to go to church on Sunday morning", Farrell said.

Our Jerry Palm updated his bracket Thursday night.

The Hokies fell to Notre Dame, 71-65, eliminating itself from the 2018 ACC Tournament. Knocking off Duke while fully healthy would have been emphatic.

The new team sheets also include the KPI, Ken Pomeroy, Jeff Sagarin, Strength of Record, and Basketball Power Index rankings. Instead, Notre Dame was gassed and gutted. Mike has a team that together the whole year, for get it.

Notre Dame did a good overall job of scoring the ball.

When arguably the top coach in men's college basketball is lobbying for a team to land a bid, that says a lot in itself.

In what likely will be Marvin Bagley III's first and only ACC Tournament, his debut was something to remember.

Bagley, who was finishing his junior season of high school basketball at this time previous year, knocked down 15 of 23 field goal attempts in an NBA arena, marking an appropriate beginning to the end of what will undoubtedly be his only season at Duke.

"You don't know what to take away", Brey said.

The Hokies kept up the offensive barrage in the second half, leading 47-26 with 15:07 left to go in the game. "I saw the show he put on". He's one of the most impressive guys. "So, we pay attention to Miami, that's the next thing on the schedule and then we'll go from there". Some of those, they are just towering. "On both ends of the floor it's really staggering". "BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is". From there on out, Notre Dame wouldn't need another field goal, as 10 free throws secured the shocking comeback for the Irish. "We'll be honored wherever we go". How much weight will it put on Notre Dame getting its best player back? We've never won it. "I think it's going to be a testament to the perseverance and relentlessness".

"In the last two weeks, the culture completely changed, the mentality completely changed, the attitude with which we played completely changed", he said.
