Here's a story from the Associated Press after Philadelphia hosted the 2017 draft.
Before the draft had grown into the entertainment juggernaut it is today, it was held nearly exclusively at hotels, beginning in 1936 at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia, before hopscotching through cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Washington, D.C. NY hotels held a lock on it from the '60s until 1995, when it officially moved to an entertainment venue - namely, Madison Square Garden.
The announcement came as the NFL Owners Meetings in New York City continued Wednesday. Those of you or us in Miami who are waiting on an NFL Draft party, don't hold your breath. "No city has injected that much energy, electricity, excitement into the draft". We didn't have the separate theater and fan festival, we brought it all together as one and in an iconic setting, and allowing so many people to feel connected to this draft. It will host the return of the Big 12 Championship this year. "The standard has been set for every future draft city to try and match".
During training camp, the Browns filed a joint application with the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Greater Cleveland Sports Commission to host either the 2019 or 2020 NFL Draft. No arrests in Day 1 or 2, outside of someone unlawfully operating a drone.
Altogether, more than 30,000 jobs (914 full-time equivalent positions) were supported by the draft, which helped generate $38.5 million in personal income, $7.9 million in state and local taxes.
It all culminates for owner Jerry Jones, whose leadership helped move the Rams back to Los Angeles and pave the way for the Chargers to follow suit.
