Even after being drafted third overall and being a top-five recruit coming out of high school, Tatum wasn't shy when it came to talking about what he needed to work on.

"I'm confident (the Celtics can pull off something)", Ainge said.

NY is conveniently located between both cities and 76ers fans have made the trip here frequently over the last couple years as their team has had high picks - including the No. 1 choice the last two years.

On a big night for both their teams, Boston and Philadelphia fans appear ready to pack the place for Thursday night's National Basketball Association draft. The C's won 53 games and were the top seed in the Eastern Conference, they also own a possible eight first-round picks over the next three years, including the pick belonging to the woeful Brooklyn Nets in 2018.

Fultz averaged 23.2 points last season at Washington, tops among freshmen, and added 5.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game, the only Division I player to reach those stats.

"It was just a freak incident, there was no contact I just planted", said the 19-year-old. If you're the Boston Celtics, you're happy about the pick.

Instead Celtics president Danny Ainge pulled a Bill Belichick, the ultimate "Draft Party Assassin", and took a young man out of Duke University, Jason Tatum. The Boston Celtics have too many assets, and they don't know what to do with them.

Tatum, the son of CBC coach Justin Tatum, said he feels fortunate to be joining a contender immediately.

"It's great", he said.

He later conveyed his eagerness to play in front of what he referred to as "the best fans in the world", come October.

"Yes, we would have picked him with the first pick", Ainge said according to CSN New England.

He turned out to be correct.

When Bulls forward Jimmy Butler was shipped from Chicago to Minnesota for a smaller haul than expected, many began to wonder what other teams were involved in trade talks and what they offered.

That won't preclude him from revisiting some of those discussions once free agency opens next month, though. "We anticipate being very active to try to improve our roster".

If the order in the 2017 draft doesn't change, it will mark the first time in National Basketball Association history that the same three teams pick in the same order in consecutive drafts. The Sacramento Kings traded picks with the Portland Trailblazers and took UNC forward Justin Jackson No. 15 overall.

Tatum is one of the most gifted offensive players Mike Krzyzewski has coached, and Celtics Coach Brad Stevens could again see why after the 6-foot-8 forward's Celtics workout last Monday. The Suns, obviously, were thrilled to draft Jackson and it looks like they might have had a hand in swaying him away from Boston.

"He was just ranting about how great of a person Brad Stevens is", Tatum said. Although his defense needs work, "He's the real deal", said the analyst. I was all for it. "They canceled a workout on us when we flew out to Sacramento, and they just chose to cancel it as we flew - just Brad [Stevens] and I and [assistant GM] Mike Zarren flew cross-country". Thus, Pagliuca, Grousbeck and Ainge saw him play frequently in college. "Flew across country, are you kidding me?" After some laughs from the media, Ainge added, "That could get me in trouble there".
