"If we don't make our team better, it'll be a hard season for us", Mourinho told MUTV after United's 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Spain worldwide Martinez nodded in from a corner on 59 minutes as the German champions overcame a lacklustre display from Mourinho's side who face Leicester City at home on Friday.

Mauricio Pochettino feels it is a "massive challenge" to manage the workload of Tottenham's World Cup stars in the early weeks of the new Premier League season.

"If some players are ready, of course we are going to use them but we are not going to take some risks because sometimes for one game, you lose the players for one month or two months and that is (why it is) so important to be clever in the decisions that we are going to take".

"There is no time to cry. We were playing against their best team, it was their complete squad apart from (Corentin) Tolisso".

"My CEO knows what I want and I still have a few days to wait and see what happens", Mourinho added.

Manchester United start the new Premier League campaign with a clash against Leicester City on Friday night.

Mourinho's frustrations with Martial are equally unusual, with the Frenchman's decision to attend his son's birth during United's pre-season tour apparently riling the former Chelsea boss.

"The players were, once more, brilliant".

Forward Marcus Rashford donned the number 10 shirt, with the club later confirming he would keep the squad number, previously worn by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney, for the coming season.

"He wanted it. He always wanted it", said Mourinho. "It's something fantastic for the kid, let's give the shirt to him".
