Microsoft Edge Preview Comes to Android

Microsoft Launcher for Android is now rolling out to all users

Microsoft Edge Preview is listed as being compatible with smartphones and tablets running Android 4.4 KitKat and newer builds of Google's operating system.

We welcome the opportunity to continue to work with the Dutch DPA on their comments related to Windows 10 Home and Pro, and we will continue to cooperate with the DPA to find appropriate solutions. If you use the Microsoft Edge browser on your PC and install the Edge preview for Android, your favorites and reading list will by synced across all your devices.

Although collection of data is a generally unpopular practice from a consumer standpoint, Microsoft does have valid uses and benefits from collecting extensive metadata. Before Windows 10, the default browser of Windows was Internet Explorer, Microsoft killed it when it launched Windows 10 but could not do well with Edge as well. If this is not the case, the Dutch DPA can decide to impose a sanction on Microsoft.

The main interface of the service is relatively clean as far as search engines which aren't Google are concerned, though scrolling down on it will still present you with "Top Stories" which can be turned off in the "Home page" section of the app's Settings menu, with the change itself going live the moment you open a new tab.

"Due to Microsoft's approach users lack control of their data", claims the DPA.

The Dutch DPA asserts that users are not well informed that their use of Edge browser and other apps is being logged and shared. The way Microsoft collects data at the full telemetry level is unpredictable.

Microsoft breaches the Dutch data protection law by processing personal data of people that use the Windows 10 operating system on their computers.

As explained by Microsoft in its blog post, one of the key features of the Edge browser is its ability to create one continuous browsing experience for Windows 10 users across multiple devices.

The Dutch DPA exemplified the fact that Microsoft collects data about which news articles users read in the Edge browser, without making them aware that this data is being collected.

The watchdog found that during the installation of Windows 10, users are encouraged to accept default settings that enable "full telemetry" rather than the more limited "basic" option.

This is the hottest attempt by the Redmont-based company to bump up its presence across the smartphone platform- by offering its apps to Android and iOS users when Windows Phone is officially dead.
