Messi and Ronaldo fans slam organisers of Ballon d'Or

Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric said he was "happy, proud and honoured" after being named victor of the 2018 men's Ballon d'Or on Monday.

Henry Winter of the Times represented England for the award, picking Modric and Ronaldo has first and second while Messi pipped Griezmann to third and Real Madrid defender Rafael Varane completed the list.

Messi is credited with 45 goals and 23 assists in 50 matches in 2018. Modric had never previously been in the top three.

"He won the Champions League".

The award has been given out annually since 1956 through France Football Magazine to the player of the year as decided by a panel of football journalists.

French disc jockey Martin Solveig appeared to embarrass Hegerberg when he asked her if she would "twerk" after she collected the trophy.

The biggest shock when the results were revealed was the Ballon d'Or victor in the eyes of the Central African Republic.

"A disappointment? Well, from where I come, it's no problem", he said.

The DJ was the subject of criticism on social media following his exchange Hegerberg and quickly apologised for his comments with a video posted on Twitter. "This was a joke probably a bad one, I want to apologise to the one I offended, sorry about that".

"He told me how he was seeing me as a player and what he was expecting from me". I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest.

"I admired him and I respected him a lot when he was a player".
