There's still a long way to go before Round 1 is settled between the Bruins and Maple Leafs, but Toronto left with more than a 2-1 series after a 3-2 win in Game 3.
"I've said this before, it feels like an quake under you".
The Boston Bruins tied the Calgary Flames for the 2nd most points in the league this year, but they did not play well down the stretch and they went out and lost game one on their home ice by a score of 4-1. "That's one of those unwritten rule hits that you don't throw, especially to a guy that's played 20 f-ing years in the National Hockey League".
For those who fear the loss of Nazem Kadri puts the series in jeopardy, remember that Kadri was suspended a year ago in Game 1, and a team without John Tavares at centre still managed to keep themselves in the competition without him. The Under is 25-10-1 in Boston's last 36 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 6-1 in Toronto's last seven vs. the Eastern Conference. Patrice Bergeron would get his second of the night just a minute into the ensuing power play to give the Bruins the win.
Kadri was suspended for a cross-check to the face of Boston Bruin Jake DeBrusk.
How did we get here?
The Leafs neutralized Boston's top line of Marchand, Bergeron and David Pastrnak at 5 on 5 in their 4-1 victory in Game 1, while Mitch Marner led and offensive surge with two goals. Tavares was knocked into him by a Bruins defender and Rask was down for a couple minutes but stayed in the game.
Rask stopped John Tavares later in the period, but the Leafs centre was checked into the Bruins goalie by defenceman Charlie McAvoy.
The flexible length of this suspension (between three and five games) is unusual - but not unprecedented - in that typically player safety sets its bans to a fixed number to games, regardless of when it occurs in the playoff series.
While regular season success is hardly a marker of postseason success, it's important to note that the 2013 Toronto Maple Leafs clinched their playoff spot a few games from the end of their 48-game season, which was shortened due to a lockout.
That physical play took its toll on the Maple Leafs, physically and emotionally, as the game wore on.
After Matthews and Johnsson had chances to make it 4-2 that Rask kept out, Andersen made a diving stop with the knob of his stick on Krejci to keep his team ahead.
Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock didn't see the hit in question. We liked our game in Game 1, felt real good about yourself.
April 20, 2018 Missed the last 3 playoff games (suspended by nhl). "Ideally all those things are contagious".
Kadri travelled to NY for an in-person hearing, meaning the league had the option to suspend the player for more than five games.
