Man convicted of 2nd-degree murder in killing of Baby Doe

Jury deliberations are to continue this week in the trial of a man accused of killing a 2-year-old girl known as "Baby Doe" after her body washed up on a Boston Harbor island.

On the stand, Bond couldn't remember the date her baby girl was murdered, although she told cops McCarthy punched Bella so hard she bounced off a bed, turned gray and died in front of her.

The girl's mother, Rachelle Bond, testified that McCarthy killed her daughter. Her body was found near the Boston Harbor two summers ago.

That independent evidence, he said, included McCarthy's phone records, his texts, weights from his father's shop used to dump Bella's body, and the very location where her body was dumped.

The state argued that McCarthy killed Bella, their key witness being Bond.

But McCarthy's defense attorneys said the murder charge was largely based on the word of Rachelle Bond, a "scheming, manipulative woman" who lied about her daughter's death to cover up her own responsibility.

Bella's body was found on the beach of Deer Island in June 2015, having washed ashore wrapped in a trash bag.

The verdict is expected to be announced in Suffolk Superior Court on Monday.

Jonathan Shapiro, McCarthy's attorney, said they will appeal the decision. She had to testify against her former boyfriend.

Bella Bond was referred to in the media as "Baby Doe" before investigators were able to identify the toddler's body.

"As prosecutors, we wish more than anyone that every case came to us with upstanding witnesses, strong forensic evidence, and a motive unique to the offender, but real life doesn't work that way", he said.

McCarthy was charged in the 2015 killing of Bella Bond, his girlfriend's daughter. When the girl stopped screaming, Bond testified that she saw that the girl's head appeared to be swollen and her face was gray. He called her a "monster" who made up a "web of lies" to put the blame on McCarthy.

Prosecutors say they're asking that Bond be sentenced to the time she's already served in jail plus probation. "What the f- did you do?" she said she asked, according to reports.

Prosecutors had charged McCarthy with first-degree murder, but the judge said jurors could also consider two lesser charges - second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, Boston 25 News reported.

Rachelle Bond in court June 7, 2017. "He's a sick, psychotic individual who got what he deserved", Sprinsky said. It was clear to us that Rachelle Bond loved that little girl, but at the same time, she also let that little girl down terribly. Bond and McCarthy were heroin addicts. Five minutes later she returned to the room, where she witnessed McCarthy punching Bella in the stomach, she continued.
