Updated Midlands closings and cancellations in response to Irma

"We believe it is in the best interest to close schools and offices until the weather threat has subsided andallows for the safe return of our students and employees", said CCPS superintendent Morcease J. Beasley.

This decision is being made in an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, parents and staff as SC prepares for the impacts of Hurricane Irma.

Lee County schools wills be closed through Thursday.

The district is among the first to cancel schools ahead of the storm.

Hurricane Irma is forecast to make landfall in Florida Sunday, then move north into Georgia.

Jacksonville University issued the following statement: "Our Emergency Preparedness Team is in full activation and we are monitoring the situation and will announce a decision by 5 p.m. Wednesday on whether to cancel Friday classes and events". Our team and campus security are in continuous contact with local, state and federal agencies regarding Irma's progress.

Florida SouthWestern State College will be closed through Wednesday.

The same goes for Edward Waters College in Jacksonville.

Florida State University has also canceled its Saturday football game against Louisiana-Monroe.

Any afterschool programs and extracurricular activities will not take place. Check nova.edu/hurricane for updates.
