Lakeland college student killed by vehicle while lying in road, police say

Police in Lakeland are investigating the death of a young man hit by a vehicle early this morning.

The incident took place just after 2 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 98 near Hollingsworth Road, Lakeland Sgt. Gary Gross said.

A witness saw something lying in the roadway and quickly swerved to the left to avoid striking it, Gross said.

The police responded and Mintner was pronounced dead at 2:24 a.m per the police report.

"We don't know if he fell and hit his head or if he was hit by another vehicle beforehand", Gross said.

The preliminary investigation revealed speed did not appear to have been a factor regarding the traffic crash and the officer did not observe any clues or indicators that Pinson was impaired, according to police.

A couple of minutes earlier, Lakeland police received a 911 call that someone who appeared intoxicated was seen walking on USA 98, in front of Lakeland High School, records said. Another driver told police that she nearly hit Minter before he was hit by a Honda Accord driven by Lawrence A. Glover of Lakeland.

Mintner, 18, was from Ocklawaha, Florida. He will not only be missed by our team but the entire Florida Southern College athletic community. "William had a tremendous work ethic in and out of the water".
