Key players in Tamil Nadu politics

Police book Dhinakaran for trying to bribe EC in fresh trouble for Sasikala camp

The notice was issued at a time when Dhinakaran has been virtually ousted as Deputy General Secretary of the V K Sasikala faction of AIADMK following a revolt by senior ministers.

However, a handful of MLAs, including prominent former minister Thanga Tamizh Selvan told reporters that general secretary and deputy could not be removed from the party by ministers, but only by a properly convened meeting of the party's decision-making bodies like the executive or the general council.

The ruling AIADMK faction "Amma", now operating under jailed Sasikala's guidance seems to be keen to regain the party symbol somehow by bringing back the O Panneerselvam faction without effecting any basic changes in the party or government.

Reacting to the announcement, Sasikala faction legislator Vetrivel told a television channel that Jayakumar did not have the power to make such an announcement.

When J Jayalalithaa died as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, her party, the AIADMK, quickly promoted her live-in aide, VK Sasikala, as its chief.

TTV was also largely non-committal on the merger of the EPS and OPS factions of the party, insisting that questions be asked of the Chief Minister and others. While speaking to India Today, Dhinakaran said he would co-operate with the police and answer all queries.

Panneerselvam said he had launched the "dharma yuddh" with the help of his supporters, including MPs and MLAs, in an effort to ensure that the AIADMK did not go into hands of Sasikala's family.

At the height of the factional feud triggered by Panneerselvam, she announced formation of MGR Amma Deepa Peravai and took the plunge into electoral politics by nominating herself as the candidate in the now countermanded RK Nagar bypoll.

Dinakaran's faction contested on the hat symbol after the Election Commission froze their two leaves symbol while acknowledging the split in the party.

Ironically, Dinakaran's statement comes hours after the Delhi Police issued a lookout notice against him in a case of alleged bribery.

"I didn't bribe anybody", said Dhinakaran.

"They wanted me to stay away, so I will stay away. If that is my destiny, I will face it and come out", he added.

A senior police officer in New Delhi said the 27-year-old Chandrashekhar has cases of cheating and other crimes against him in Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, Chennai Police and Bengaluru Police.

He, however, claimed the rebellion against him was out of "fear".
