Katie Taylor Barely Edges Delfine Persoon To Unify Division

Katie Taylor is looking for one more belt to seize total control in the lightweight division

The Belgian WBC champion puts her solitary belt on the line against Taylor's WBA/IBF/WBO straps over ten two-minute rounds and reckons she is right in there with a shout.

"The opportunity to become undisputed champion is what boxers dream of".

The Bray native, who is seeking to become the undisputed world champion, went straight from her fight against Rose Volante into a training camp for the Persoon fight. I'm ready to make history and I'm ready to perform on Saturday night.

Katie Taylor's promoter believes she has denied herself the chance to become one of the world's most famous female athletes to instead become one of its most successful. I understand how big the challenge is, but I feel well-prepared.

One wrote: "Katie Taylor did not win that at all".

"It's very exciting; I can set the sport (on the map)". This is the position I want to be in. "But I have to keep winning for these fights to happen".

A lot of Irish boxing fans will be in attendance as well, as Taylor holds major drawing power with her hometown fans.

A sensational exchange erupted in the fifth - Taylor beckoned her opponent in and Persoon obliged. It is hugely disappointing for Anthony with the Miller fight not going ahead but it is brilliant for me to have Persoon and I can imagine how frustrating it is for the men sometimes.

"We were friends for years", said Taylor.

She's got 43 wins and just one loss, she's been a long-reigning champion and she's a fantastic person.

Taylor's tough night got worse when, in the third, she was slightly cut by an accidental clash of heads.

"Persoon is recognised as one of the best in the world pound-for-pound". "This isn't just what women's boxing needs, this is what boxing needs". Unless she makes a reckless mistake, she should take all of the belts home to Ireland.

"If I go for the fight, and I'm gonna go for the fight, and I can win the fight, I think I'm the first Belgian boxer that can be undisputed champion". Let's hope Taylor's message is heard loud and clear by the rest of her peers, male and female - including the heavyweights at the top of the card.
