San Antonio then made the decision to rescind the qualifying offer made to Simmons, making him an unrestricted free agent. Previously, teams were having second thoughts about giving him an offer sheet as the Spurs have the right to match it. They were trying to re-sign him after, but talks broke down shortly after they renounced him, after which Simmons started negotiating with other teams. An undrafted free agent out University of Houston in 2012, he eventually made it to the National Basketball Association after trying out with San Antonio's D-League affiliate - the Austin Toros. So far this offseason the 27-year-old Simmons has been connected to the Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks.

He averaged 6.2 points per game during the 2016-17 regular season.

Simmons, a 6-foot-6 wing, should provide some scoring punch and defensive potential.

On Thursday, the Spurs renounced Simmons. He logged major minutes and gained nationwide attention during the playoffs after Kawhi Leonard sustained an ankle injury, averaging 15.4 points in the Spurs' last seven playoff games against Houston and Golden State.

The Spurs could also use Brandon Paul, whom they signed to a contract recently.
