Embattled Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has announced Tuesday that he is retiring and has endorsed his son, John Conyers III to run for his seat.

Following news of the allegations, Conyers was hospitalized in Detroit for a stress-related illness, according to his lawyer Arnold Reed. "My legacy will continue through my children", Conyers said in an interview with a local radio station, Praise 102.7.

The revelations against Conyers came amid a flurry of allegations of sexual misconduct against several of his colleagues in both the House and Senate, including Reps.

On Monday, yet another allegation was lodged against Conyers, when a woman who said she worked for the congressman for more than a decade, Elisa Grubbs, said he slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs while she was sitting next to him in the front row of a church.

The decision sets up a battle within the Conyers family for his Detroit-area House seat. He is married to Monica Conyers who pleaded guilty in 2009 to conspiracy to commit bribery as a member of the Detroit City Council.

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) holds a news conference on H.R.1962, the "Free Flow of Information Act of 2013", May 22, 2013 in Washington, DC.

Conyers has already stepped down from his leadership position as ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee late last month.

The sexual harassment allegations against Conyers surfaced November 20 after BuzzFeed News reported he settled a wrongful dismissal complaint with an employee in 2015 for $27,000 in exchange for a confidentiality agreement and that he made advances toward female staffers, including requests for sexual favors, caressing their hands in a "sexually suggestive" way, and rubbing their legs and backs in an inappropriate manner while in the office or in public.

He also hired civil rights heroine Rosa Parks to serve on his congressional staff in his Detroit office.

Conyers, has admitted to paying a settlement to a former staffer but denies her sexual harassment allegations.

Last week, calls for Conyers' resignation grew louder, as House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, a key ally of Conyers, called on him to leave office in the wake of the allegations.

After a 15-year struggle, Conyers succeeded in establishing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a federal holiday in 1986.

Top Democrats, including Pelosi, have also called for.

Conyers regularly won elections with more than 80 percent of the vote.

In recent years, Conyers lent his name and clout to a series of progressive bills, not least the Expanded and Improved Medicare For All Act. His candidacy was first reported by the New York Times.

Conyers' potential resignation was raised in a statement by Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond, D-La. As you know his health is not the best.
