Jake Gyllenhaal Confirms 'Spider-Man' Role in First Instagram Post

Even though plot details surrounding the movie are being kept under wraps, Mysterio has appeared in several Spider-Man cartoons and video games.

The "Donnie Darko" star just joined Instagram and this was his first post.

Though this is Sony's third take on Spider-Man, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield having previously portrayed the webslinger in the Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man respectively, the current Spider-Man is the first to be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, things don't go to plan, and Peter finds himself battling to save his friends from a villain called - yup, you guessed it - Mysterio.

Marvel has three movies set to launch next year, including Captain Marvel (March), Avengers 4 (May), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (July), so marketing for these movies has already started. That's obviously enough to tell us that Spidey will be resurrected by the end of the new Avengers film.

The film will see Tom Holland return to play Spider-Man and Zendaya as Michelle Jones. He's always been a particularly ridiculous villain - who can forget his iconic, screechy voice from the '90s animated Spider-Man series - so making him a real-world threat will be a challenge in and of itself.

So this is actually the most concrete evidence Gyllenhaal will be playing Mysterio, a character who - in the comics at least - uses special effects to fake super powers and throw Peter Parker off balance.
