Jaguar Land Rover commits to an electric/hybrid future

The company's first fully electric car the Jaguar I-Pace will go on sale in 2018

The company hopes that every auto built after 2020 will either be fully electric or a hybrid that makes use of both an electric motor and a traditional petrol-powered engine.

The company's first fully electric model will be the Jaguar I-Pace, which will go on sale next year. No other reproduction or distribution is permitted without prior written consent.

The even better news is that this might not be a one-off either, with Tim Hannig, the director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic confirming that they would be looking into possibly selling the E-Type Zero either as an upgrade for existing models or as a stand-alone vehicle to be bought. The vehicle was produced by Jaguar Classic in Warwickshire, U.K.

This setup has allowed Jaguar to retain the original suspension and brakes and it handles, claim Jaguar, just like and original E-Type. A fully autonomous virtual concept, the Future Type explores tomorrow's mobility, where vehicles could be shared not owned.

Those who know the automotive world would know that the Jaguar E Type Roadster is an iconic auto. "We're looking forward to the reaction of our clients as we investigate bringing this concept to market", said Tim Hannig, Director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic.

Authorities in France and the United Kingdom outlined plans in July to ban the sale of diesel and gasoline cars by 2040 as a means to reduce air pollution and carbon-dioxide emissions, which are linked to global warming.

The super-green Jaguar E-Type Zero, based on a 1968 convertible model, will be capable of 0-60mph in just 5.5 seconds - one second quicker than its petrol-powered equivalent.

- "We are future-proofing our heritage", says JLRCEO Ralf Speth.

Jaguar Land Rover hasn't made any indications as to how much the hybrid and electric options will cost on its cars - nor how its electric models could look or perform. Called Sayer - named after the designer of the E-Type - it's a removable unit that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and voice recognition to carry out tasks such as summoning the vehicle and acting as a personal concierge.
