An improvised explosive device (IED) blast was set off on a private vehicle when a team of the C-60 Quick Response Team of the Gadchiroli police was on way to inspect a fleet of vehicles torched by Maoists earlier in the day.

In April previous year, India's security forces killed 37 suspected Maoist rebels in two separate gun battles in the region.

The Maoists are believed to be present in at least 20 Indian states but are most active in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand - and Maharashtra. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government of failing to control Maoism in the states ruled by it. Fadnavis said the state police was prepared to give a fitting reply to left-wing extremists. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also said the attack on Maharashtra Police personnel in Gadchiroli was an act of cowardice and desperation. "My deepest condolences to their families", Singh tweeted.
The reception was cancelled as a mark of respect to the police personnel who lost their lives in the Naxal attack in Gadchiroli district, a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said.
The Naxals also put banners and posters condemning the killings of their comrades past year, before setting ablaze the vehicles. The incident happened on April 9, just two days before the region votes in the first phase of the 2019 general election.
