Gadchiroli blast: An IED blast by Maoists was set off on a police vehicle.

At least 15 C-60 Commandos have been killed after an IED exploded by Naxals in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli.

The team of C60 Commandos was targeted by Naxals in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli, which is infamous for repeated Naxal attacks.

In April previous year, India's security forces killed 37 suspected Maoist rebels in two separate gun battles in the region.

"A group of Maoists gathered around 3.30 am at Dadapur where the construction of a national highway has been going on since the last few months", Shailesh Balkawade, Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli said. I salute all the courageous personnel.

The Maoists are believed to be present in at least 20 Indian states but are most active in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand - and Maharashtra. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. A gunfight is under way between the police and suspected Maoists at the site of blast, ANI reported. My thoughts & solidarity are with the bereaved families. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government of failing to control Maoism in the states ruled by it. Fadnavis said the state police was prepared to give a fitting reply to left-wing extremists. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also said the attack on Maharashtra Police personnel in Gadchiroli was an act of cowardice and desperation. "My deepest condolences to their families", Singh tweeted.

The reception was cancelled as a mark of respect to the police personnel who lost their lives in the Naxal attack in Gadchiroli district, a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said.

The Naxals also put banners and posters condemning the killings of their comrades past year, before setting ablaze the vehicles. The incident happened on April 9, just two days before the region votes in the first phase of the 2019 general election.
