Most Turks no longer want to join the European Union and will be "comforted" if they are denied membership, President Erdogan has claimed.

Some Turks believe the coup attempt was secretly orchestrated by Mr. Erdogan himself, even though there is no evidence. Five days after the coup, Mr. Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency - since extended - that critics say has been the vehicle to amass ever-more authority while undercutting the civil service, the press and the independent judiciary.

"It was disappointing for Turkey to feel the lack of full support of its long-standing western allies right after the coup [attempt]", said Celik. "Please let's not deceive the world with these lies", he said.

Their detention raised alarm internationally, increasing fears that freedom of expression was being suppressed under Erdogan.

"No one is jailed because of journalism here". The Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency listed among the events scheduled for Saturday a series of nationwide Quranic prayers, multiple public "Democracy Watch" marches around the country beginning at midnight, and the debut of a state-sponsored documentary screening on the event.

Erdogan was speaking nearly a year to the day since the July 15 attempted military coup. Over 50,000 people were arrested, and 140,000 dismissed or suspended on suspicion of being linked to US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen.

The military coup attempt on July 15 killed over 240 people and wounded a thousand others.

Since the PKK resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015, it has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians, including many women and children.

"If (Erdogan) is hindered from roaming around in Europe and influencing European countries the way he wants, then I hope that this will affect his politics", AFP quoted him as saying.
