IHC dismisses petitions for ban on Nawaz Sharif's rally

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Pakistan’s interim prime minister

"The security is an issue, though elaborate measures are being taken to make the journey free of any risk", a PML-N leader said.

He said a huge number of people were waiting for Sharif along the Grand Trunk Road linking the capital, Islamabad, with Lahore, which is about 380 km (237 miles) distant.

He added that Panama case verdict was a unanimous decision by five SC judges after a thorough investigation.

In October 1999, General Musharraf, the then army chief of Pakistan, had ousted Sharif in a bloodless coup and seized power. There are also chances that former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz may be given the role to lead the party. Sharif was accompanied by hundreds of his supporters. Mr Khan alleged Mr Sharif was continuing to use state resources to destroy the judiciary and thereby the democratic system.

The judges also ordered for reopening and filing of several corruption cases against the former premier, his brother, two sons, daughter, son-in-law and the finance minister.

The Prime Minister Office in a statement said Abbasi thanked the president and said that terrorism is a common threat for both the countries and both countries need to fight it together. Earlier, Asif Kirmani, a lawmaker from Sharif's party, said vehicles carrying supporters will pass through Islamabad's key road before entering Rawalpindi. Lion is Sharif's political party election symbol.

The petition was filed by PTI's lawyer Usman Basra in an attempt to stop members of Sharif family from leaving the country as Supreme Court tasked NAB to file references against them. Sharif's party initially wanted Abbasi to serve as an interim premier for 45 days until Sharif's younger brother, Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab, secures a national assembly seat in a by-election. Qadri has vowed to get justice for eight supporters killed during anti-government rallies in 2014.

Mr Sharif, however, never completed any of his three full terms in office.
