Human Spaceflight Systems By Boeing and SpaceX Will Be Ready By Mid

Nicole Aunapu Mann is a California native and a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps.

SpaceX is shooting for a test flight without passengers in November and a crew flight in April.

"What we see now is a much great emphasis on safety", Ferguson said, regarding differences between the shuttle program.

The Starliner flight will be Mann's first journey to space.

The space agency has partnered with Boeing and SpaceX to develop the Starliner spacecraft to launch atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and the Crew Dragon launching atop the Falcon 9 rocket, respectively.

Robert Behnken is from St. Ann, Missouri.

Team Boeing consists of retired Air Force Col.

Doug Hurley: Hurley's hometown is Apalachin, New York. NASA already said that it is looking into that for Boeing's test flight. Behnken flew on Endeavour twice, STS-123 and STS-130, while Hurley was pilot on Endeavour for STS-127 and Atlantis on STS-135.

NASA has named the crew of astronauts tasked with reviving America's prowess in extraterrestrial travel.

After successful completion of the flight tests with crew, NASA will review flight data to verify that the systems meet the agency's safety and performance certification requirements and are ready to begin regular servicing missions to the space station, the USA space agency said. Beyond its own contract with Russia, NASA was able to secure five more seats through an arrangement with Boeing, which obtained them as part of compensation for an unrelated joint space venture (Sea Launch) it had with the Russian company that also builds Soyuz (Energia).

Josh Cassada: Cassada grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. This will be his first spaceflight.

Williams was born in Euclid, Ohio, but considers Needham, Massachusetts, her hometown. She is a retired Navy captain and test pilot and was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1998.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Government Accountability Office recommended NASA pursue a backup plan for getting astronauts to the ISS, as its contract with Russian Federation to send them to the station via Soyuz launches in Kazakhstan ends at the close of 2019.

Mike Hopkins: Hopkins was raised on a farm near Richland, Missouri, and he has a master's in aerospace engineering. "This is a test pilot's dream".

The Pasadena native accumulated almost 3,000 hours of flying time in more than 40 aircraft, with 400 carrier landings and 24 combat missions. A rookie to spaceflight, Cassada was selected by NASA in 2013.

Michael Hopkins was born in Lebanon, Missouri, and grew up on a farm near Richland, Missouri. "We congratulate all the astronauts chosen to fly to the space station on commercially developed systems". In 2013 and 2014, Hopkins spent almost six months aboard the ISS, logging almost 13 hours of spacewalks.

NASA says commercial transportation to and from the space stations will enable expanded station use, additional research time and broader opportunities of discovery aboard the orbiting laboratory.

NASA also revealed that the SpaceX Dragon cargo craft "packed with science and hardware" will return to Earth on Friday from the International Space Station.

John M. Logsdon, the founder of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, noted that buying a service from commercial providers is a major departure from how the space program has operated historically.
