Holly Holm Loses UFC Championship, Makes Room For Ronda Rousey Comeback
Mar 08 2016
This is the UFC 196 live blog for Holly Holm vs. Miesha Tate, a bantamweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
"I think that Ronda now will now fight Miesha Tate for the title - that's what's gonna happen", White said.
UFC Head Dana White had wanted Holm to wait for a highly anticipated rematch with Ronda Rousey.
It was a battle between two fighters with boxing and wrestling specialties respectively, and in the end Tate's ferocious ground and pound grappling earned her the victory with a fifth round submission.
The win sparks interest at once in a Rousey-Holm rematch, but UFC will likely hold any official announcement until it finds Tate's next opponent.
White said he texted Rousey, who supposedly wasn't watching the fight.
"I text Ronda, and she said, 'What happened?'" White said.
Tate's win further changed the bantamweight class landscape that Rousey had dominated for two years. Diaz took the fight with the agreement that the fight would be at Welterweight, where neither would cut weight.
Holm tried fruitlessly to defend the now sunk choke, and flailed for a moment before she took a nap courtesy of the new Women's Bantamweight Champ, Miesha Tate. Even more of an important fight", Holm told FOX Sports on Wednesday. Holm did have some shining light; she came out on fire to win the first round, and then went on to win the third and fourth.
The next question: Who will she fight? Rousey looked invincible. Not that her record intimidated Holm. "She's not afraid to fight on her feet and she's pretty good in a scramble. I had to be ideal in that final round", she said afterwards.
The defeat means Holm is now the one chasing a rematch, not Rousey, who made no secret of her desire to avenge her one blemish. The strawweight ace took a few licks from Letourneau before taking charge by doing what Jedrzejczyk does best: dismantling her foes with technical striking, including laser-beam punches and stinging low kicks.
Hmmm... Pay attention to the match you're at, Ronda! Though ABC News initially reported that Holly tapped out, their live coverage later went on to indicate that Holm was indeed unconscious after the replay showed Holly's attempt to tap and her body go limp.
